The Western Centre began as the Western Local Section in 1911, before becoming the Western Centre in 1918. Its geographic spread included West Wales and South Wales. The West Wales Sub-Centre was created out of the Western Centre in 1937. Then in 1975 the West Wales Sub-Centre was combined with the South Wales elements of the Western Centre to create a new South Wales Centre. This left the Western Centre after 1975 comprising of 4 areas; Gloucester & Cheltenham Area; Bristol Area; Bath & Chippenham Area; and Swindon Area.
In September 2000, as a result of a strategic review of the Institution's activities and regional operations, the Western Centre was disbanded and in its place its areas became branches as follows; Bristol Area became Bristol Branch; Gloucester & Cheltenham Area became Gloucestershire Branch; Bath & Chippenham Area became Somerset and Bath Branch; and Swindon Area became Swindon Branch.
