The Southern Centre was called the Hampshire Sub-Centre prior to 1946 (formed in 1929). The Eastern Area was spun out of the Southern Centre to become the Sussex Centre (see IET/CEN/33) in 1981 which left the Southern Centre comprising of the Solent Area and Wessex Area.
In September 2000, as a result of a strategic review of the Institution's activities and regional operations, the Southern Centre ceased to exist. Its Solent Area, minus certain post codes, became the Solent Branch (see IET/CEN/42) and the Wessex Area, plus and minus certain post codes became the Dorset and South Wiltshire Branch (see IET/CEN/43).
