Scope and Content
This volume contains correspondence showing the development of the telegraph through use by railway companies, with details of the personal investment which Cooke made to get a telegraph line completed, as he knew that this was the secret of success, and the rapid expansion of the telegraph system afterwards. The correspondence also shows the causes of the breakdown of his partnership with Wheatstone, the arbitration process and subsequent agreement to purchase Wheatstone's royalties in the shares, and the establishment of the Electric Telegraph Company.
