Scope and Content
Personal and business correspondence of William Fothergill Cooke, mostly relating to his dispute with Charles Wheatstone, together with legal documents (copies and originals) connected with the case, in 7 bound volumes. Volume I is indexed and cross referenced, and the papers are annotated in blue and red, to indicate the interesting sections. Volume II is not indexed, and some letters are annotated by Latimer Clark. Volume III is correspondence between Robert Wilson, solicitor for Cooke and William Richardson solicitor for Wheatstone. Volume IV is copies of agreements and assignments. Volume V is copies of papers laid before the Arbitrators (most of which were burnt after the end of the arbitration proceedings). Volume VI is copies of correspondence and agreements concerning the establishment of the Electric Telegraph Company and papers laid before the arbitrators. Volume VII is copies of original correspondence in Volume I. Volumes V, VI and VII are not originally numbered.
