- Scope and Content1-page handwritten letter, from Joseph Wilson Swan, Lauriston, Bromley, Kent (on his personal headed paper), and sent to Charles Gimingham. The letter says; "I should feel obliged if you would make me a couple of 46 Volt, 16-20 candles, [.] using the strips enclosed instead of platinum for the leads in [.] the bulbs. very truely yours J W Swan" [Note: Born in Sunderland, Sir Joseph Swan moved with his family to his home Lauriston on London Road, Bromley, in 1883. As there was no room in his house for his laboratory, he soon bought the house next door, Sunnyside, and it was here that he refined his electric light bulb and made other scientific breakthroughs. Sir Joseph and his family moved from Lauriston to a new home in Holland Park, London, in 1894 as he began to enjoy more success.] [Digital version available]
