Charles William Earp was born near Cheltenham in 1905. He graduated from Cambridge University with first class honours in 1927. His subsequent professional career was entirely with the ITT system: he joined Standard Telephones and Cables (STC) in 1927, transferring for 4 years to ITT's Paris laboratories (now Le Laboratoire Central de Telecommunications) before returning to England to spend 2 years at STC's Footscray location as chief of advanced development of broadcast receivers. In 1935, he transferred to STC's Radio Division at New Southgate, where in 1946 he became chief of advanced development. In 1967 he transferred to Standard Telecommunication Laboratories at Harlow as Senior Principal Research Engineer, where he remained until his retirement in 1970. He continued to undertake consultancy work for ITT after his retirement.
C W Earp was the 1st winner of the IEE's J J Thomson Medal in 1976.
