This interview with Norman Goddard was conducted by Maria Watkins, the wife of former Mullard Research Laboratories (MRL) employee, Tom Watkins. The interview took place 22 June 1999.
Norman Goddard joined Mullard Electronic Research Laboratories (MERL) in the later part of 1946 (one of its founder members) - he was previously in the Admiralty Signals Establishment for the later stages of WWII, together with Dr Christopher Bareford. Norman stayed with them until 1984. He was the Director of Research at Mullard Research Laboratories from 1976 to 1984.
In this 50 minute interview Norman describes in detail, why and how MERL was created, and the first people who were employed by Bareford at MERL. He disusses his work prior to MERL at the Admiralty and his work on microwave signals to detect enemy radar. Norman covers his interest in vacuum tubes at MRL and other MRL projects including microwave work and development of receivers. He discusses his career at MRL, the processes and procedures that he put in place, the relationship with Philips, and funding.
