This interview with Peter Trier (1920-2005) was conducted by Maria Watkins, the wife of former Mullard Research Laboratories employee, Tom Watkins. The interview took place 19 June 1999.
Peter Trier joined Mullard in 1950 and stayed with them until 1969. He was the Director of Research at Mullard Research Laboratories from 1953 to 1969. In 1969 he was appointed to the Board of Philips Industries as Group Director for Research and Development where he remained until his retirement in 1985.
In this 48 minute interview Peter describes in detail, the history of the laboratories, the setting up of the Research Laboratories in 1946 (under his predecessor Dr CF Bareford) and the work carried out by the laboratories. He also talks about some of the first employees and their backgrounds and discusses at length the relationship with Philips, and research at Philip's main research laboratory in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. Peter also discusses the relationship with the Mullard head office in London, funding for the laboratories and recruitment.
