Scope and Content
Copy of 150-page 1st proof of unpublished version, showing marked corrections of 'ionospheric observations at Halley Bay', 1961. The published version was much shortened and only reported the observations made.
The major British contribution to the International Geophysical Year (1957-58) was to send an expedition to an unexplored region of the Antartic, to Halley Bay. The results were recorded in the 4 volumes of 'Royal Society International Geophysical Year Antartic Expedition, Halley Bay. 1955-59', published by the Royal Society in the years 1961 to 1964.
The ionospheric studies are contained in 2 sections of volume 2 and were written during one year of result analysis at the Radio Research Station (RRS), Slough, under the active expert leadership of W R Piggott. As originally drafted these sections contained explanations and background as well as advancing new theories to account for observations in this previously unmeasured part of the world. Due to arguments between W R Piggott and RRS management over chapter content, this lead to the publication of only a shortened version containing just observations.
