Details

This is a segment of the shore end of 1865 transatlantic cable which has been mounted in two brass rings located at either end of the section. Unlike OPC/1/187 there is no inscription on the brass rings and the ends of the cable have been sealed so it is not possible to see a cross-section of the cable. However, it is still possible to tell that the section is from the 1865 cable by comparing its distinctive outer covering with the examples shown in the cable presentation cases made by the manufacturer which can be found on the website atlantic-cable.com. The 1865 transatlantic cable began to be manufactured in 1864 and was completed in May 1865 prior to the cable laying expedition. It is not possible to tell whether this segment was manufactured in 1864 as per OPC/1/187 or in 1865.
