Edward J Back who joined the IEE as a Graduate member in 1946, before becoming an Associate Member of the IEE in 1953, worked for the company Johnson and Phillips in the early 1950s. This collection of electrical technical papers was amassed by Edward Back whilst working as a Technical Assistant in the Consulting Engineering Department of Johnson & Phillips and date primarily from the period 1950 to 1955.
The collection comprises mostly of original articles from electrical engineering journals but there are also copies of many Johnson and Phillips technical letters and memoranda, and also letters and brochures relating to other companies.
The collection includes a small number of personal papers dating to Back's time at Johnson and Phillips and some objects related to early radio (1920s and 1930s).
Johnson and Phillips was a cable making and wire rope machinery company founded in 1875 which by the 1950s had become a specialist in the area of transmission transformation and control of electricity. It manufactured electric cable, cable accessories, switch gear, transformers, capacitors and overhead line materials. It was acquired by the Delta Metal Company in 1964.

Initially Back worked as a Technical Assistant in the Counsulting Engineering Department, probably until 1955, before moving to the Training Department where he worked in 1956.
