- Scope and ContentDisplay boards used in an exhibition to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Oliver Heaviside, 18 May 1850. Subjects of the display boards as follows: i) 1850-1868: includes photographs of 55 King Street, Camden; examples of Heaviside's drawings made at the age of 11; dedication in book awarded to Heaviside by the Royal College of Preceptors 1865; Frederick Heaviside holding the above book. ii) 1868-1874: Includes three photographs of Heaviside's notebooks copiled whilst he was working on the Anglo-Danish cable. iii) 1868-1874: Includes photograph of Heaviside's notes for his first paper entitled 'Comparing Electromotive Forces', published in the English Mechanic 5 July 1872. iv) 1874-1889: Includes photographs of 3 St Augustine's Road, NWI; letter from Lord Rayleigh, Royal Society, complaining about the 'exceeding stiffness' of Heaviside's paper; loading cases at the terminals of cables in the London Trunk Exchange; one of Heaviside's 'filter' calculations c 1878; part of a draft letter by Heaviside, in which he refers to his being thought of as a sort of 'mathematical monster' (unidentified). v) 1889-1925: Includes photographs of Heaviside, taken at Paignton by his brother in 1890; Heavside's notebook c 1918; 'Homefield', Lower Warberry Street, Torquay; announcment of Heaviside's being made an Honorary Fellow of the AIEE 1918; pages from the Electrical World, May 4th 1918, describing the above; Heaviside's gravestone in Torquay. vi) Election of Oliver Heaviside into the Royal Society 1891: includes a photograph of his election certificate. vii) Heaviside's diploma from the University of Gottingen, Honorary Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Arts, 1905. viii) Unpublished work 1900-1924: Chart describing the ideas expressed in Electromagnetic Theory vol. 4. ix) Restoration of EMT, vol. 4.
