B/W photograph. Inscription on plaque "Charles Hesterman Merz. A former student of this College Hon. Doctor of Science of Durham University Faraday Medallist of The Institution of Electrical Engineers. Born at Gateshead 5th October 1874, he lost his life during an air attack on London 15th October 1940. By vision and enterprise in the domain of Electrical Engineering he rendered signal service to Great Britain and to her Overseas Dominions. With his friends he leaves an inspiring memory."
