Scope and Content
Proof copy of etching of Babcock & Wilcox boilers at Dunston B Power Station, signed by the artist, Cyril Henry Barraud, made in 1934. The etching is titled, 'Dunston 50Hz, 12 B&W boilers'. See also OPC/1/016 for Barraud etching of Kersley Power Station.
A label on the reverse of the frame (no longer present) said "Dunston 50 cycle power station. Framed proof copy of an etching, signed by the artist, Mr Cyril H Barraud, showing the stoker-fired boiler-house at the above Power Station of the North Eastern Electric Supply Company. Presented [to the IEE] by Messrs Babcock & Wilcox Limited - 13th September 1934."
As part of a transition from the 40 Hertz (Hz) system, used by the Newcastle-upon-Tyne Electric Supply Company (NESCo), to the 50 Hz system, used by the new UK National Grid, which took place in 1932, Dunston B was built to replace the A power station. Construction of the new power station began in 1930,but its full completion was delayed by WW2 until 1951.
[Note: the artist Cyril Henry Barraud (1877-1965) was a British artist, son of Herbert Rose Barraud and Francis Barraud, whose principal medium was etching. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1912 and 1924. During WWI he served with The Artists' Rifles and was commissioned in the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada and after being wounded was posted to the Canadain War Office as an official war artist. In addition to landscapes he painted and etched; London street scenes; popular destinations close to the LNER (railway); cathedrals; churches; industrial building notably interiors of Dunston Power Station; illustration; and christmas cards.]
