Original bars of selenium, held in tubes, used by Willoughby Smith in his experiments of 1873. The tubes have latterly been mounted in a frame.
[Note: Willoughby Smith (1928-1891) was an English electrical engineer who discovered the effect of light upon the electrical properties of selenium. He discovered the photoconductivity of the element selenium. This discovery led to the invention of photoelectric cells, including those used in the earliest television systems.]
This object featured in The Science Museum, London, exhibition on 'The Sun' and its subsequent worldwide tour from 2018-2023.
