Als dated from Portland Lodge Park Town, Oxford, thanking SPT for a copy of his papers on the influence machine which he has found even more interesting that the one on mercurial pumps. He had noticed SPT's paper on the conditions of self-excitation in a dynamo machine in the Philosophical Magazine but had not had the opportunity of reading it fully, however, he was sent back to it when a dynamo on which he was working refused to self excite.
