- Date[1814]-09-12
- Scope and ContentAls from Pictet to Ampere, dated at Geneva, thanking Ampere for his letter and pamphlet which he was able to show to Sir Humphry Davy who is staying near to Geneva before moving on to spend the winter in Italy. De la Rive will also be replying to him about the nomenclature which Ampere has suggested. Sir Humphry Davy arrived in Geneva intending to do a great deal of work and he established a laboratory and had the use of the apparatus of [Di Saummur] and of Pictet. However, the return of the inflammation of the eye forced him to leave the work, then the arrival of compatriots and friends and being in the vicinity of fishing and hunting and the Circe de Copot have left him little time for science and his continued examination of iodine. Lady Davy has been well received in society and has made a very good impression. Amongst the visitors to Geneva has been Dr Brewster, author of experiments on the polarisation of light. Optics and polarisation are the new field and much work is being done on it. The Society of Physics and Natural Sciences of Geneva meets at Pictet's house and at its last meeting he gave a memoir on the origin of basalt rocks. Also at the meeting was [Delandelle] who gave a talk on the Botany of Mexico. He and Montpellier had discovered more than 200 new species. Pictet communicated Ampere's letter and the results of his experiments which were heard with great interest.
