- Scope and Content3-page letter, dated 2 September 1914, from Captain George William Clarkson Kaye, AMIEE, to S P Thompson. Captain Kaye was the Commanding Officer of Coalhouse Fort, East Tilbury. The letter is accompanied by 4 sheets of notes and 3 printed sheets concerning the tables in Kaye's book. The letter says; "Electrical Engineers, Coalhouse Fort, East Tilbury, September 2 1914. Dear Professor Thompson, I am sure you will forgive me if I do not answer your points in the very kind letter you sent me at the National Physical Laboratory a day or two ago. I hold a commission in the Electrical Engineers, and was ordered down here on July 30 before war was declared. I brought down 100 men and it is our job to man the searchlights for the gunners at the various forts comprising the Thames defences. We have had a very strenuous time since we came, and my time is so fully occupied that you will realise that I have no time to attend to the matters which claim my usual interests. I am glad to think you have found my tables worthy of your attention; and when the war is over I shall hope to attend to your criticisms, which I need not add I greatly value. Your very truly G.W.C. Kaye (Captain)." [Digital version of letter available]
