Scope and Content
Als written from Adelaide, appalled to hear of Mr Watson's suggestions about a defect in the Patent and a public demonstration of the invention. States what three things he insists should happen (publication of the specification for circulation, renewal of the Patent if it has not proved profitable by the expiry date, and patience and perseverance in getting it adopted). Giving details of the situation in Adelaide, with land speculation, good climate and soil, scarcity of money and the recent discovery of lead ore containing silver, and some gold. Feels he should resign as Trustee as they are so far apart and communication is so uncertain, power of attorney which he left with Henry should be sufficient for all needs but if not he will draw up a more specific one and send it on, arrangements for transmitting money and documents through the South Australia Bank, has been making money by distilling, and if he has any spare will lend it out at exorbitant interest. At the foot of the letter is a Bill for £50 to be paid to Thomas Davy from his [nephew] Thomas Bennet [who has sailed with Edward Davy].
