Scope and Content
Providing details of the cable laid by the Western Brazilian Company. It was originally ordered by the Great Western Telegraph Company for a transatlantic line from England to Bermuda and then to New York, with a spur to St Thomas to pick up the West Indies and South American traffic. However, for reasons which Bright is not aware of, the Great Western Telegraph Company failed and the cable ordered, 4,500 miles of deep sea light cable similar to that laid for the first transatlantic cable and subsequent deep sea cables, was turned over to the Western and Brazilian Company. However, it has now been laid in shallow coastal waters along the Brazilian coast, for which it is not suitable, unless substantial lengths of it have been modified. Bright encloses the original specification for the cable.
