Scope and Content
Notebook headed 'Propagation of Plane Waves. Telegraph and Telephone Circuits. Dielectric with duplex conductivity. 1887-1888'. MS transcripts of papers published in the Electrician 1887 and the Philosphical Magazine 1887-1889 in which Heaviside developed his theory of non-distortional circuits and their application in telephony and telegraphy. Subjects include duplex telegraphy, Maxwell's equations, resistance in front of a wave, transition from polar field of a charge to a charge at rest to a plane electromagnetic wave, developing into a general theory and sinusoidal solutions. With additional notes and calculations on left side pages, including transcripts of unpublished papers on the electromagenetic theory of light, an irrational partial differential equation, theory of a vibrating string with load and friction at one point. Also notes headed Cable Problem and Extensions August 1895, with later annotations; Anomalous Fourier Series, September 1895. From the other end of the volume there is a paper on the Age of the Earth dated 18 November 1894, and later notes on the same subject dated 1 January 1895 and 6 January 1895.
