Scope and Content
MS notebook, with pages used from both ends of the book. First part headed Abridged Account of Experiments in May 1886 London and are mainly to do with condensers, relays, telephones: Whitley Experiments October 1881 on condensers, relays, telephone equipment; Experiments with telephones 29 January 1881; then notes made at Newcastle upon Tyne from 26 December 1870 to 14 June 1872 on cable testing, and experiments around this in connetion with his work, but also other notes about earthquakes in Cumberland, the aurora borealis, earth currents and magnetic storms, finding and repairing broken cable; then straight into other section of notes dated 22 November 1875 on experiments to do with blood vessels in the eyes; then to notes on a case of lightning dated 6 June 1881; then to notes on cohesion between two plates of glass, and the effect of heat on them; then notes dated 3 April 1880 on Magnetic circuits. At the other end of the notebook the section is headed Differential Telephones which is not dated and deals with coils. There is a note at the end of this section which is dated April 1889 and starts "It is two years since I worked experimentally" and describes an experiment using a microphone to record a violin.
