Scope and Content
A.l.s. to R S Culley from W H Preece, with pencil comments. Refers to David Lumsden's report on Preece's relay as used on the London-Birmingham circuit. Preece does not agree with this report: "The fact is I have no faith in Lumsden's judgement or knowledge and I in common with many others think you make too much of him." Preece claims that his relay has worked well on other circuits. Includes data on the workings of an ordinary relay, a double wound relay and Preece's relay. Also refers to a "pretentious and impudent paper" published by Oliver Heaviside, on his claim to the invention of the duplex telegraph. Preece also mentions being refused an appointment with Scudamore. Pencil comments include an observation that Preece's equipment only works on short circuits and disagreements with Preece's comments on relays.
