Scope and Content
Autograph letter dated from the Melbourne Club describing their delayed disembarkation at Brisbane, caused by the doctor having left before their arrival on Saturday night and not working on Sunday; and his trip by train to Sydney then Melbourne, being taken straight to the races, with a description of the race track and the running of the Melbourne Cup, which was won by the favourite Apologue. He gives a diary of their schedule in Melbourne and includes a newspaper cutting reporting his visit, describing the attentions of reporters and photographers as' beyond a joke'. He has the use of the Commissioner of the Victoria Railway Company's private car [carriage] which is a comfortable way of inspecting the lines. He has also been given an office in the Stock Exchange Building, while taking meals at the Melbourne Club. Electrification is a political question in Victoria and he feels that he must take care with his recommendations. He talks about the weather and what a lovely city Melbourne is.
