Scope and Content
Autograph letter dated from Scourie Hotel, Scourie, Sutherland giving details of his holiday in Scotland and the journey from Lairg by [horse drawn] coach in three 16 mile stages, with the passengers having to walk for long stretches due to the hills. He mentions the drought which is affecting the fishing, and a walk up Ben Stack through ground which should have been boggy but which was almost dried out. He also mentions the deer forest belonging to the Duke of Sutherland and a possible trip on the steamer to Stornaway. The scenery is not as beautiful as that around Glengarriff in Ireland but the drive is finer than from Cork to Glengarriff.
