Records of the IMGTechE which was founded as the Vulcanic Society in 1884. The first meeting of the Vulcanic Society took place 30 June 1884, then at the 6th meeting, 10 September 1884, the name was changed to The Lambeth Junior Scientific Society. At a general meeting in June 1885, the name of the Society changed to The Junior Engineering and Scientific Society and in June 1886, the name of the Society was simplified to The Junior Engineering Society. At a meeting on 5 October 1894 a new name for the Society was adopted, The Institution of Junior Engineers, and then a further change was made 5 December 1902, when the name was altered to The Junior Institution of Engineers, a name which remained the same for almost 70 years. Some notes on the JIE, made in 1967, can be found in the IET Archives reference files.
The name was changed from the Junior Institution of Engineers to The Institution of General Technician Engineers (IGTE) following approval at the Extraordinary General Meeting held 8 January 1971. This was renamed the Institution of Mechanical and General Technician Engineers (IMGTechE) in 1976. In 1988 the IMGTechE and Institution of Technician Engineers in Mechanical Engineering (ITEME) merged to form the Institution of Mechanical Incorporated Engineers (IMechIE) - see separate series IIE/IMechIE for the records of the IIE/IMechIE from 1988. The ballot amongst members of the IMGTechE and ITEME was declared 24 June 1988 and the IMechIE was duly incorporated 1 July 1988.
