- Scope and ContentThis series falls into two parts. Items SC MSS 005/I/2/4-12 refer to preparations for publication of Heaviside's works, Electrical Papers Vol I and Vol II and Electromagnetic Theory Vols I, II and III. Heaviside appears to have collected reprints of all his articles, corrected and annotated them and then sent them to the printers for resetting. The Proof copies were then sent to him for corrections. For correspondence relating to the publication of his works see SC MSS 005/I/3/9. The remaining part of the series is pamphlets and reprints of papers sent to Heaviside by other scientists and mathematicians, many heavily annotated by Heaviside. He was occasionally employed by The Electrician and the Journal of the Society of Telegraph Engineers to abstract papers for these journals, and some of these papers may have been sent to him in connection with that work. Others were sent to Heaviside diretly from the author for his comments, or because the papers refer to Heaviside and his work. The subjects are mainly mathematical, including vector analysis and algebra as applied to physical problems. There are also works on the analysis of cathode rays, radiation, radioactivity and early attempt to define the workings of the atom, telegraphy and telephony. Scientists whose works are represented here include Lord Kelvin, Philipp Lenard, Alexander Macfarlane, R A Millikan, A Kennelly, SP Thompson, Heinrich Hertz, Sir Oliver Lodge, Professor Zeeman and H A Lorentz.
