Edmund George Lazarus was born on 14 September 1882 in Waltair, East Coast of India. He studied in India before travelling to England to continue his studies. He worked for A E Walker Ltd, then for Ferranti Ltd as an improver in the Switchgear Erecting Shop, leaving for 6 months to work as a machine tool designer at Hans Renold's cycle chain works, before returning as a Senior Draughtsman in the Switchgear Department. He moved to Metropolitan Vickers Ltd in 1914, working at Trafford Park, until 1916, and then returning to India to work at Calcutta, Madras and Bombay offices of Metropolitan Vickers, before leaving the company to join the Tata Engineering Company in 1919. While working for the Tata Engineering Company he worked on electrification projects. In 1927 he moved to the Bombay Electric Supply and Tramways Company (BEST) as Planning Engineer. He introduced several new initiatives at BEST, including designing buildings to house electric machinery, instead of employing outside architects to do the job. He also introduced showrooms and a conference Hall to the BEST headquarters, and was responsible for overseeing the programme for the 80 apprentices employed by BEST. In his 15 years with the company he built 150 sub-stations, two large motor garages and two of the largest offices in Bombay. He retired in 1942. He was Vice President of the BEA [BEST Employees' Association] and Chairman of the Amateur Cine Society of India for two years. His hobbies included photography and travel.
