Women's Engineering Society - Papers collected by Mrs Isabel Hardwich
Reference
UK0108 NAEST 092A
Date
1925-1987
Scope and Content
The collection contains a small amount of WES printed material, articles and reports by Isabel Hardwich, and a few items of correspondence. There are also several sets of photographs used by the WES. Many of these photographs of women engineers came from the Metropolitan Vickers/AEI publicity department, and were used by the WES through Isabel Hardwich. Most of this material dates from her Vice-Presidency and Presidency of the WES, although she also collected earlier material, for example the items from the WES conference in 1925.
The majority of the collection is taken up with reference material collected by Isabel for her WES work. This includes some early pamphlets on women in engineering, a large number of surveys and reports on the engineering industry and the position of women in it, and articles and cuttings form professional journals and daily newspapers. There is also some American material, and a few items from France, India and Poland. Isabel collected material throughout her career, so while the majority dates from the late 1950s to the 1970s, she also acquired items from 1917 and the 1920s, while the latest material dates from the early 1980s.
